Dear Library Users! Do you know what languages your neighbors are speaking and reading? What country they came from? According to the US Census Bureau, in 2011, 70.1% of the population in Spring Valley (Village) spoke a language other than English at home. Let your neighbors and friends know about the Finkelstein Memorial Library and that the Library welcomes them with new and classic books in languages other than English. We offer comprehensive collections of books on traditional and secular interests in Hebrew and Yiddish. Books in French, German, Haitian Creole, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Spanish are available in the World Languages Collection on the third floor.
Have we missed any languages people are looking for? Let us know! We will accommodate our newcomers with books to keep them in touch with their language and culture while adjusting to life in United States. (Books, audio and visual materials to study the English language at home are also available on the third floor, in a separate collection.) Some of the new books in the World Language Collection are translations of English titles—to connect to the tastes of general readers while providing a great leisure read. For instance, W naszym domu (the Polish version of In Our House) by Jodi Picoult, and Las reglas de la pasion (When Passion Rules in Spanish) by Johanna Lindsey are popular, and Russian readers love Я пойду одна (I’ll Walk Alone) by Mary Higgins Clark. Popular series of books such as the “for Dummies” series for Windows, Excel, and the GED test, and even Guitarra (Guitar) para Dummies—are now available in Spanish editions. The Finkelstein Memorial Library is keeping the book link between the cultures alive! DID YOU KNOW THE LIBRARY OFFERS FREE ENGLISH CLASSES FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES? DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN SEARCH OUR CATALOG IN 4 LANGUAGES?
